My name is Manon. (pronounced Man + O) Yes….my mom cursed me with my name. In her defense I guess she never though I’d leave Quebec. I’m a jewelry artist and painter. I’ve been creative as long as I can remember and things haven’t changed. I now live in Scottsdale, AZ. I spend most days in my studio making pieces that speak to my heart. Thanks for stopping by!!
The last few months I’ve been using a technique call Keum-boo on many of my pieces. *Keum-boo (also Kum-Boo or Kum-bu—Korean “attached gold”) is an ancient Korean gilding technique used to apply thin sheets of gold to silver, to make silver-gilt. Traditionally, this technique is accomplished by first depleting a surface of sterling silver to bring up a thin layer of fine silver. Then 24 carat gold foil is applied with heat and pressure—mechanical gilding—to produce a permanent diffusion bond.* Basically I’m using fine silver and heating it up on my small kiln and then gilding 24 carat gold to the places I’d like it. (this isn’t the kind of gold you buy at a craft store…btw..lol)
It’s nice to add a pop of gold to some of my work. I’ve quite enjoy the process of making Keum-boo jewelry.
On another note ..I will be doing Hidden in the Hills Studio Tour and Sale again this year. It’s a studio tour in the Cave Creek, Carefree and North Scottsdale, Arizona area. The dates are Nove. 17-19 and Nov 24-26. I will be guest artist of Carole Perry at Laughing Glass Studio. If you’re on the area and need more info you can contact me at manon@sistersofthesun.com

I’ve been working with deerskin leather cord in quite a few of my recent pieces. I make sterling beads for them. Two attach to the ends and one in the middle that allows you to adjust the cord to go up and down therefore the owner can wear the necklace long or short.
I love the way these look. They’re also a breeze to put on and take off.
This one features two Arizona Kingman turquoise gemstones. The saddle colored deerskin leather cord lends itself well to this turquoise.
The arrowheads are pretty cool. This is a great necklace that you can wear long or almost to the neck like a choker.
Of course this necklace which features a naturally shed deer antler is perfect with the deerskin leather cord. This one is very striking on.
I will have more of these pendants with the deerskin leather in upcoming weeks. They’ve been very popular for me and I love making them.

I haven’t posted in quite a long while. I have been really busy in my studio. Busy is good!!! These are some of my latest pieces that I’ve worked on. I’ve also been crafting many rings but I thought I’d just post necklaces today.
Love bringing the turquoise to life in a necklace.
I had three Larimar stones that I was going to use separately but decided they would look great together. Glad I went with my instinct on this one.
My latest pieces have been lots of work but fun to work on. I have lots of new turquoise and stones to work into my designs. Better get at it!!!

I’ve talked about Instagram in a previous post but lately I believe that Instagram is the new blogging. As an artist/jeweler/business owner, it provides me with what I need to tell my story about my pieces and behind the scenes in my studio. It’s fast and simple and I can reach a much wider audience than Facebook or blogging. It’s my favorite go-to social media platform.
Instagram allows each caption to be 2,200 characters. I never use that many words….lol. I’m much more to the point but at least I know that I have the option of using more.
I actually prefer using IG instead of blogging. It’s faster, much more fun and super easy. It feels like a community over there and I don’t have to overthink what I’ll post.
Instagram feels like a live journal to me. I can post works in progress, my studio, new pieces or whatever strikes me in my business that day. You can have multiple accounts and switch back and forth. Many people have a personal account and a business one. (Best to keep them separate.)
Because IG is such a visual platform the most important thing in my opinion is having great pics. You don’t have to be a professional photographer, even though those people have the most amazing IG accounts, but I suggest taking great shots of whatever you’re featuring. There are many apps that can help you with that.
In short, I feel that Instagram is the new blogging. I can tell my business story in fun square spaces. I use it everyday to find whatever suits me and to show what’s going on in my little world. If you’re not on there yet…check it out!!

My favorite part of my work is I get to make one of a kind jewelry. Ok…. let’s face it. There’s so much past and present jewelry out there that everything has kind of been done but…..when you add your own gemstones and your own style it becomes your one of a kind jewelry. I think in jewelry as in every other art form it takes practice and patience for your style to emerge and even as our work grows you can still see someones style.
The piece above was a gorgeous Damele turquoise. I added a peridot to the flower. I just adore this one and am thankful it’s gone to a good home.
Recently, I sawed and pierced more shapes. This is a pic when they were not finished or sanded. You can see the result of the fish in the picture below.
I love the quote on the back of the fish. I thought the Kingman turquoise reminded me of the sea and was a perfect pairing the fish.
I’m a sucker for a druzy stone. This deep color pink is eye-catching for sure.
I sawed some little flowers to add to some rings. A touch of gold makes them pop. These rings are great for gifts.
So you see……one of a kind jewelry is so personal. It might be the stone, the design or the words that mean something to the owner. It is a pleasure for me to create these.
See you soon

I recently lucked into some cool hearts to make some personalized heart jewelry. It’s no secret that I’m a lover of hearts so I was pretty darn excited to find some of these heart treasures.
The above photo is of a Mexican Fire Opal. It went quickly to a new home and I’ve been asked often about getting another stone like it. Grrrrr………it’s hard to find. I’m heading to Tucson for the gem show on Saturday so maybe I can score there.
These stones are a easier to locate but equally as beautiful. This rhodochrosite has sold but feel free to contact me if interested in a similar stone as I have a few more.
Awe….the Spiny Oyster heart necklace. I finished this piece on Monday and just adore it. The following pic has the back view. I added a handmade sterling feather with a Sleeping Beauty turquoise. I think the color in the Spiny Oyster is stunning.
Making this personalized heart jewelry is a joy for me. I love adding the personal touches that make each piece extra special.
They all warm my heart.

*be Strong when you are weak. be BRAVE when you are scared. be HUMBLE when you are victorious. be BADASS everyday.* ~Pink
In honor of breast cancer awareness month I made a pink druzy necklace. This necklace has the word *badass* on the back. This is for all the badass people who have fought cancer and won and those who continue to fight. The quote above seems like the appropriate quote for this month.

Speaking about *badass*…lol. I used this Graceful – African green opal for this setting. It is a badass stone. So pretty. It’s happily gone to a new home. Sad to see it gone.
Boulder and Pilot mountain turquoise necklace.

It has been a week of necklaces. I used a large Boulder turquoise and a small Pilot mountain for this piece. I really love the way it looks on. The stones seem to compliment each other nicely. It feels feminine even though it has some size to it.
Thanks for stopping by and remember to be BADASS everyday!!!

*Moon dust in your lungs, stars in your eyes, you are the child of the cosmos, a ruler of the skies.* ~author unknown
Inspiration is out your front door. A cactus, a moon and a sunset. Bam….. big time inspiration. I can’t get enough of these nights. It blows me away to think we are just a speck in this night sky, in this universe……so…. I think instead of the beauty and that we’re so fortunate to be surrounded by it.
Inspired by the sunset sky. Sterling earrings with pretty peridot gemstones. Love these!!

Most of the time I wing my designs but sometimes I work in my jewelry sketchbook to come up with new ideas or to see if something will look good on paper before I start creating it. The upside is that I can always refer back to it in the future if I’m creating a similar piece and it’s actually fun to pull out my watercolors and play around.
The above sketches show what I had in mind for the earrings and the Royston turquoise necklace.

As you can see my jewelry sketchbook drawing came close to the actual finished piece. Ok….. kind of close….ha, ha!!! It’s such a great stone. I’m glad I thought this one out a little before diving in.

Sketching ideas can help your design process greatly. I know I should do more of it so I’m trying to up my jewelry sketchbook game a little. I must say that it’s fun to see it go from paper to fruition. 🙂
